You decide how you want to quit.

On Your Own Simply stop by and pick up a packet of Quit Smoking Materials at the Wellness Center, second floor of Kesnar Hall, located on Greek Row.

With Some Help Call the Wellness Center at 536-4441 to schedule an appointment with a Wellness coordinator to discuss options and receive assistance in developing your quit plan. You may also talk to a medical provider about quit smoking options when you are at the SIUC Student Health Services Clinic for your appointment.

JOIN A SUPPORT GROUP! Studies show that people who are trying to quit smoking on their own are not as successful as those who have help and support from others who are going through the process together. That is why you might want to consider joining one of the support groups offered by SIUC Student Health Programs. Each group meets once a week for two hours for a total of seven weeks with optional weekly meetings available afterwards depending on participant's needs.

As part of a group, you develop your own unique quit program based upon your needs. Some people choose to use nicotine replacement patches, others use the nicotine replacement chewing gum, and others may decide that the "cold turkey" method is right for them. Regardless of which method you choose, you'll learn about your own particular smoking patterns and develop a comprehensive behavior relearning plan to help you quit. You'll also create a maintenance plan to ensure that you stay smoke-free in the future. Support groups offer three distinct advantages to quitting on your own:

Group support from others who really know what you are going through
A structured approach that provides information and education about the quit process
Encouragement through each phase of the quit process
Quitting is the single most important thing you can do to improve your health, your appearance, and your sociability. At the same time, you can do something nice for your friends by not forcing them to breathe secondhand smoke when they are near you. Take the first step to living smoke free today by calling 536-5585 for an appointment! Or, visit the Wellness Center in Kesnar Hall for more information. You can do it!
