A Fresh Environment

Everyone enjoyed a fresh environment at Carbondale’s first ever CLEAN AIR CLUB NIGHT on Wednesday February 26, 2003. More then 500 hundred people showed up to enjoy the smoke-free environment. “It was so refreshing to go out for a night and not walk out smelling like a giant cigarette,”

“It was so refreshing to go out for a night and not walk out smelling like a giant cigarette,” said Rachel Sunderlin, SIU student. “I loved not having that dirty bar feeling as I left.”

The theme "California" was chosen because all of the restaurants, bars, and clubs have been smoke-free in this state for five years!  To make the night lively and stimulating, the club was decorated with tropical palm trees hanging everywhere, colorful fish and other sea life

floating on the walls and beach balls covering the dance floor. Free group pictures were taken throughout the whole night in front of a huge tropical sunset background.

A pure Oxygen Bar was available with three refreshing “flavors” to enjoy by all who won one of 20 free sessions. In addition, 20 gift certificates from local merchants were also given away. One lucky winner, Clarissa Schwantner said, “I have always heard about the oxygen bars in California but have never tried one. It was awesome! My favorite flavor was “Sex on the Beach.”

The excitement really picked up when the group dance contest began. A total of seven groups competed for cash prizes. 2 Intense and S.I.R.D.T. were in the running for the grand prize but in the end 2 Intense won with an overwhelming response from the audience.

The night was capped off when everyone drew close for the grand prize drawing of a round trip for two to California valued at nearly $1,000!  Mario Lewis, the winner of the grand prize, was speechless when his name was drawn and could hardly pull himself together to say a few words!

The night was a tremendous success, with an overwhelming response on how great it was to breath in clean air. “I hope that Carbondale will start offering more events like this,” said Carrie Bowen, SIU student. “I think that this is a great idea for people who don’t like a smoky atmosphere. It allows them to really enjoy hanging out with friends without breathing smoke.”

This event was co-sponsored by the SIUC Live Free Project and the Jackson County Health Department.
